Ford Explorer Sport driven by 350-horsepower plant

Published by Cornelius Nunev under Honda

The Ford Explorer is in many different ways the poster child of the SUV boom of the past two decades. Millions of them have been sold, either in their old guise or the new cross-over based version. However, Ford has had it with the car being unbelievably family-oriented and is releasing a performance model, the Explorer Sport.

Everyone remembers owning one

The Ford Explorer became extremely popular in the 1990s as people started to select up on the SUV trend rather than the minivan trend. Gas did not cost a lot back then, so it did not matter if your car used to be a gas guzzler or not. The Explorer began to be something family-friendly homes always had, just like everybody seemed to have a golden retriever.

People started to stop using fuel guzzling automobiles pretty fast when fuel costs went up. They decided to go for a family-friendly crossover SUV that would not take as much gas to power. Now, the Explorer Sport is Ford’s brand new car. It hopes to take the family part right out of the vehicle.

Beast of an engine

The Explorer Sport will run on a twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6. The current Explorer has an available EcoBoost engine, a 2.0-liter in-line four-cylinder engine producing 240 horsepower. The Explorer already has an available V-6, a 290-horsepower 3.6-liter, but the engine slated for the Explorer sport, which according to Inside Line is a 3.5-liter V-6, should generate roughly 350 horsepower.

The Explorer Sport will get 16 miles per gallon city and 22 mpg highway. It has a four-wheel drive choice if you would like it and a Terrain Management System with traction control for different weather conditions. It has a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

Is the cost too much?

However, the Sport is also slated to be the top of the Explorer range and therefore will likely cost in excess of $40,000. However, the more luxuriously equipped Explorers, according to USA Today, sell the best. More than 40 percent of all Explorer buyers choose the Limited trim, which starts at $39,505 after destination charge.

With regards to comparable SUVs, none of them will get fuel mileage as good as the Ford Sport since they all have V-8 engines. They do have more power and cost less money though. For example, the Dodge Durango R/T has the 4.7-liter Hemi V-8, and only costs $35,795. The vehicle does get less fuel mileage though. That same motor is in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but it gets better gas mileage and costs less than $40,000, depending on the style you choose. You will get less than 20 mpg highway with some SUVs of the same size, including the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia.

Hotel rates going up|Hotel rates are on the rise

Published by Cornelius Nunev under Honda

Recessions tend to wreak havoc with people’s plans, specifically for vacations. Consequently, fewer people have been staying in hotels and charges have been staying low. However, hotels are starting to raise their prices, as more individuals are booking rooms these days.

Recovery indicators

Recessions not only make a mess of economic conditions, they also take place to be a real buzz-kill when it comes to getaway plans for many people. Fewer people flew, or left home at all, and fewer people stayed in hotels and consequently, hotel charges stayed relatively low for both corporate and leisure travelers.

Time Magazine explained that the recovery might be on its way since hotel prices have been going back up. Hotels.com said there was a 4 percent increase worldwide for hotels and 5 percent for North America. Yahoo News explained that hotel charges increased a ton in 2011. In June 2011, hotel rates increased 7 percent for business travelers and 6.4 percent for leisure travelers, according to hotel rates by Pegasus Solutions.

Time explained that Pegasus has also reported an increase in hotel prices for Feb.

Two months of increasing prices

Single-month record rate increases were observed by Pegasus in Jan and February of this year, as business hotel rates went up in January 2012 by 7 percent compared to January 2011, according to TravelDailyNews. In February, according to Time, business hotel rates climbed by 7.1 percent, compared to Feb. 2011. Hotel charges for recreational travelers rose by 7.3 percent.

Pegasus keeps track of the really large hotel chains such as Omni hotels, Holiday Inn, Hilton, Radisson and Marriott. The study does not release which hotels really raised charges and does not tell what the average amount is. It is expected to be about $103.18 in Feb. in the U.S. according to STR Global.

According to TravelDailyNews, the rate increases had a lot to do with increased bookings, as 5.1 percent more business travelers and 2.3 percent more leisure travelers booked a night in February. However, the additional day due to leap year contributed heavily, as leisure bookings would have been 1.6 percent less than Feb. 2011 without Feb. 29.

Recovering from past charges

In spite of large increases, according to Time, hotel charges are still down from many years ago. Pegasus estimates business hotel charges are still 2 percent below 2007 and 2008 prices and leisure prices are 10 percent down from that time.

In 2012 and 2013, it is expected that hotel charges will increase quite a bit, according to PKF Hospitality Research. PKF explained that the rate should go up 4.7 percent in 2012 and 5.3 percent in 2013. This increase should be anticipated at all luxury hotels.

Mercedes-Benz G-class arrives strong with V12

Published by Cornelius Nunev under Honda

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz G-class crop is ready to move outside the box, reports Automotive News. Stylistic flourishes are plentiful. But a V12 option in the G65 AMG is what has most fans excited.

Redesigning the square

Mercedes-Benz was clearly thinking creatively when they built the G-class line, noted for its square exterior. The 2013 model will continue to be square, but a few extra benefits have been added to help with the design and overall style of the automobile. Some 2013 Mercedes-Benz G-class spy shots were taken that show alloy wheels and tail lamp graphics that are different from before. Be ready to see a new grille that has three slats rather than the seven at first on the vehicle. The style is also altered by the mirror housing and horizontal LED running lights that are brand new. There will also be headlamp inserts.

The changes in 2013 will not make any difference to the two wheelbases offered by Mercedes-Benz. This involves the 112.2 inch long version and 94.5 inch standard version.

Different options

Mercedes-Benz has not released any info about the G-class engines yet. It is expected to stay the same in 2013 though, according to a few inside sources. The 208 hp, 3.0-liter V6 diesel for Europe and 383 hp, naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V8 will both be returning to the brand new automobile. It will have the same amount of power as before, according to the automotive press.

Reaching to the more exclusive end of the G-class lineup, the G55 AMG’s 500 hp supercharged 5.4-liter V8 will be exchanged by a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 with 536 hp. That motor will appear in the new G63 AMG. The large news when it comes to Mercedes-Benz G-class engines is the G65 AMG. It will reportedly run the same kind of twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 that was recently confirmed for the SL65 AMG. This will make the G65 AMG the first G-class model with V12 power. With 621 hp and 737 lb-ft of torque, sources claim the 5,500-pound-plus G65 AMG will go 0 to 62 mph in 5.2 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph.

Gas mileage

A new seven-speed 7G-tronic gearbox is going to be put into the brand new 2013 Mercedes-Benz G-class models to be able to translate into fuel savings. The gearbox will have an automatic stop/start and break energy recovery in the G63 AMG model. The 5G-Tronic unit being replaced has been in the car since 1979.

Better controls for you

An interface in the car will contain a 4.5-inch color touchscreen making Internet functions easier. The new G-class will also get to see a brand new instrument cluster design.

Nissan adds new heater to 2013 Leaf

Published by Ingrid Johnson under Honda

Nissan did not get its electric Leaf into showroom in all 50 states until recently. Even so, 9,700 models sold to U.S. drivers in 2011. The 2013 design, boasting many new upgrades, will start manufacturing on United States soil, possibly as soon as December. The Japanese car maker promises to construct the automobiles in its Smyrna, Tenn. plant.

Feedback from consumers

Mark Perry, Nissan’s director of product and advanced planning, told Detroit News that the proposed changes are all in response to customer feedback. The revamped Leaf will feature a darker interior trim, leather upholstery and a more productive heater system.

Some can choose leather

The rival Chevrolet Volt has leather available as an option, so Nissan Motors has decided that in 2013, customers will have that choice also. This is because customers have been requesting the choice. This is despite Nissan’s goal to stay green in the Leaf vehicles.

A darker ride

Currently, the Leaf only comes with clean-looking, light-hued plastic inside fixtures. Some consumers have expressed a desire for a darker finish inside. Nissan is providing that as an option, also.

Heater to be productive

Heaters draw a ton of power for electric vehicles. This is why Nissan has decided to add a brand new heating system to the 2013 Leaf. It is going to be much more productive and extend the range of the vehicle.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the Leaf only has a 75 mile range. This is the case when it is fully charged.

Added heated seats

Nissan seems significant about keeping its customers warm. The car maker added heated seats and steering wheel to the 2012 design, as well as a rear climate-vent.

Hoping to bring assembly to US

The current version of the Leaf is assembled in Oppama, Japan. But the automaker hopes to improve U.S. availability and, consequently, sales of the brand new Leaf by assembling it domestically. The Smyrna, Tenn., plant is being retooled for the manufacturing. The EV’s lithium-ion battery packs will even be made in TN in a nearby center. A separate plant in Decherd, Tenn., will start making the Leaf’s electric motors in early 2013.

Unconfirmed start date

The Smyrna plant could start production at the start of December, but it is unknown for sure when manufacturing is going to begin there, according to Motor Trend and Nissan Motors spokesman Brian Brockman.

Treasury gives thumbs down to Ally IPO

Published by Ingrid Johnson under Honda

Ally Financial, a finance business with auto finance interests, went in the hole $17.2 billion to the United States government throughout the automotive bailouts of 2008 and 2009. The financier had planned an Initial Public Offering to make up for what it owes, yet the U.S. Treasury believes that is a terrible idea. The Treasury wants General Motors to buy Ally back.

Ally and GMAC – There and back again

Ally executives were hoping an IPO would be the answer to their troubles, which is why they would be disappointed if General Motors returned and took its ownership back. Ally Financial was once called GMAC when GM owned it.

Ally’s mortgage unit may be facing bankruptcy while it has a high cost of capital compared to some other industries. The Treasury argues that these problems mean a successful IPO is very unlikely. Ally Financial is obviously not stable enough to on, according to the Federal Reserve, as shown by stress test outcomes.

Two or more pieces

Bloomberg News explained that the Treasury has a recommendation that Elliott Management Corp., a serious shareholder, agrees with. This would include splitting Ally Financial into two pieces such as the online banking operation, which got over $28 billion in retail deposits in 2011, and the auto finance arm that is one of the largest in the business.

Ally looks to fulfill its mission

Automotive News was able to speak with Ally spokeswoman Gina Proia. She said the business promises to repay shareholders, its mission.

Due to the automotive bailouts of 2008 and 2009, Ally is mostly owned by taxpayers. In fact, 74 percent of the company is owned by working class individuals.

Almost went public in 2011

Ally Financial was considering a buyout from Dominion Bank, Canada’s second-largest lender, and General Motors last year. It also almost went public during the year. Obviously, neither of those things occurred.

Since 2009, Ally Financial has provided dealer auto financing for about 6.7 million General Motors or Chrysler automobiles. Customer auto financing account for an additional 2.4 million automobiles, said Proia. Since the bailouts, Ally has reportedly paid $5.4 billion back to the United States Treasury.

Gas mileage sliced by EPA on BMW 328i

Published by Ingrid Johnson under Honda

German car maker BMW is probably not the happiest camper at this time. The mpg fuel-economy rating for its 328i automatic design has been downgraded by the EPA.

Overall drops

According to a BMW spokesman, the automaker has been ordered by the EPA to lower the miles per gallon numbers for the 2012 BMW 328i automatic. Only last week, the sedan commanded 24 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. Today, it can only achieve 23 and 33.

Own tests done

Automakers are expected to run every brand new model through a battery of strictly prescribed tests and report the results to the EPA before receiving an official fuel-economy rating. The majority of the time, the bureau will accept the figures from the car maker without question. Occasionally, however, the EPA will conduct its own tests. The lowered numbers are a result of that second round of tests by the federal regulation bureau.

Not many analyzed

Only about 15 percent of all United States automobile models actually get a special test done by the EPA, according to Car and Driver magazine.

Bigger drop than expected

Typically, when the EPA makes a change to a fuel economy rating, it is not that low. This is something that BMW said surprised it. It is a massive drop when the rating drops by three mpg. Small changes were expected, as the fine print disclaimer claims it will do.

Find out about BMW 328i

The 2012 BMW 328i packs a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder 240 horsepower engine that delivers 260 lb-ft of torque. It has an eight-speed transmission, which is operated by paddle shifters attached to the steering wheel.

What exactly are the EPA standards?

The car was originally tested by BMW in Munich. An EPA fuel-economy test has to be done on an indoor track, under controlled conditions. The type of fuel is even specified, so that all variables remain constant. The automobile is attached to a dynamometer and is put through five different test cycles: city, hot city, cold city, highway and aggressive highway.

Lower rating not going to change

The lower rating should be expected to stay for the 328i automatic, as BMW cannot retest the car until its 2013 model comes out. The six-speed manual shift version still has an excellent 23/24 rating.

Shield Your Car By Having It Detailed

Published by Angelia Jamison under Honda

There aren’t a large number of individuals who wouldn’t opt to have a clean car, but there are many people who aren’t so enthusiastic about getting it cleaned. You have a couple of options: clean it yourself or pay another person to clean it for you. Most of the time, you’ll find that your chosen option is to clean it yourself because the cost of having someone else do it is prohibitive. It truly is astounding how much dirt gets accumulated on your car, both inside and outside. While washing your car or truck on a biweekly basis is a great idea, there’s a whole lot more to detailing. The rest of the article is all about how best you should go about washing your car.

Whenever you wash your car, you start and end with rinsing. To remove the removable grime, you need to do a complete rinse job, and also to soften up the dirt that has stacked up. It’s best to use a hose so you have source of flowing water but the pressure has to be correct or you won’t hit your target. To help keep your car or truck protected from potential scratching, keep the water pressure from getting too strong. Detailers think it is best to have water falling onto the car coming from a hose without a nozzle. Make sure to only go with a cleaner designed for cars instead of what you may have on hand for cleaning around your house. You should stay away from dish washing liquid because it is too harsh and can harm your car’s surface.

Once you have bought the cleaner you need, mix it as advised and prepare to wash your car. You have a glove or sponge, that you just dip into the container of water containing the solution you just mixed. As a way to keep your vehicle safe, you need to follow these guidelines, before doing anything else. Use a good supply of water and cleaning agent; smaller cars need 3 or 4 buckets while larger ones need 5 or 6. For the most effective washing, clean your vehicle in sections, beginning with the top, in order to facilitate rinsing.

Next, you should clean the doors and other car surfaces. Once you complete a certain section of the car, rinse it well. After you have hand-applied the soap, rinse immediately so as to avoid developing a film or unsightly stain on the car’s surface. Make sure that you thoroughly rinse the car after finishing the individual sections and use adequate water to eliminate any soap residue. In case the initial wash does not look satisfactory, then do a second wash.

Whenever detailing, the grime is not all removed during the first introductory wash. The next washing is going to take away the rest of the dirt, which is what good car detailing is all about.

Auction nets $4.4 million for Porsche 917/30

Published by Ingrid Johnson under Honda

The record for most costly Porsche ever sold at auction was recently set, at the Amelia Island auction by Gooding and Co. The record was set by a remarkably uncommon Porsche 917/30 race car, which went for $4.4 million.

Slate of uncommon Porsches

Porsche has an enormous history in touring car racing as it has been a part of it for a long time. It is the brand everyone compares their sports vehicles too. Car makers should compare their cars to the 911 if they are really serious about succeeding.

Recently, there were a ton of uncommon Porsches sold at the Amelia Island auction by Gooding and Co., USA Today explained. Among them was the model James Dean drove when he was killed, the 1955 550/1500 RS Spyder. It sold for $3.7 million. A lot of lots sold for over $1 million while 11 world records were set for highest price paid for a Porsche.

Focus

One piece that got the most attention was the very uncommon Porsche 917/30. The 917s were very legendary. The initial one won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971. Before that Ford won the race for four years with the For GT40.

With the 917/30, you could go from 0 to 60 in 2.3 seconds with its turbo-charged 5.4-liter V-12. It had a top speed of 240 miles per hour and gets 1,100 to 1,580 horsepower. The beat was created as Porche modified the 917 for the 1972 Can-Am Challenge.

There is only one seat belt that acts for security, according to Wired.

The 917/30 ended up winning the Can-Am challenge for two years until it was excluded from the race in 1974. This was due to a rule change requiring all race vehicles to get at least three miles per gallon. The one sold was given $4.4 million, which is the most ever paid for a Porsche, although it never actually raced.

Seventeen cars in collection

The late Matthew Drendel had a collection of 18 turbocharged Porsche race cars that he got before dying at age 35. This is where the assortment of 17 Porsche automobiles up for sale came from, according to Wired. The Daily Mail explained that the Drendel collection brought in $36 million.

The overall auction, according to the Florida Times-Union, involved the sale in excess of 70 classic automobiles. According to DeDePorsche, a Porsche enthusiast blog, the 917/30 was rumored to have been bought by Jerry Seinfeld. Seinfeld is known for having an extensive collection.

Goodyear unveils new tire technology in Geneva

Published by Ingrid Johnson under Honda

Goodyear, the leading name in tires, will show that the R and D department has not been slouching when it uncovers several cutting-edge ideas at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. One tire inflates itself and manages its own pressure. Another large model is loaded with springs and is meant to use on the moon.

Goodyear’s research and development teams have been working overtime as the tire maker seeks cutting edge solutions to meet the changing needs of the automotive industry.

Jean-Claude Kihn is the senior vice president and chief technical officer of Goodyear. He said:”Goodyear has always been proactive in research and development, and we are looking forward to displaying a range of innovations that people will never have seen before. These technologies have been specifically developed to meet the ever-changing requirements of modern consumers and society focused on performance, sustainability, the environment and convenience.”

Goodyear is working to meet the challenge of reducing the global dependence on petroleum. One of the tires on display in Geneva is made of “BioIsopren,” a bio-based material used to replace the petroleum-based isoprene used in most modern tires.

Another tire that is good for the environment is the Air Maintenance Technology tire. This permits the tire to self-inflate and regulate its tire pressure. This should help fuel consumption decrease.

For very harsh areas of our planet, you can try the new “spring tire.” This was developed with help from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to be able to create a tire that might be used on the moon or other extraterrestrial areas.

The spring tire is supposed to be able to carry a ton of weight for long distances in tough areas. It has 800 springs in it, which is why it got its name. The types will do better than the wire-mesh tires that Goodyear designed for use on the Lunar Roving Automobile in the Apollo moon missions in 1971.

Extreme heat and cold change the way rubber functions, which is why National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Goodyear decided to keep away from using it in the new lunar tires. Rubber also does not fare well with solar radiation that could be found on lunar surfaces.

The R&D 100 award for 2010 was given to the tire maker for the spring tires. This technology has not been shown off to the public for practical application though.

On March 8, the Geneva Motor Show began and showed off the technology. It will stay there until March 18 when the show closes.
